Griha Pravesh means ‘entering a home’. ‘Griha’ means ‘home,’ and ‘Pravesh means ‘to enter’. Buying a new home and moving into it is a major milestone in a person’s life. To celebrate the occasion, Hindus also perform Griha Pravesh Pooja on a Shubha Muhurat. A new home or a home of one’s own is a dream come true. So it is very important to ensure that nothing goes wrong on this special day. Also, people hope that in the new home, they will be able to lead a good life that includes happiness, wealth, health, and success.
The Importance of Shubha Muhurat
Vedic Astrology states that the time we select to do something has great significance. Whether it’s getting married, buying a vehicle, or moving into a new home, we should do it at an auspicious time. Today, even expecting parents choose the time their child should be born so that it can have a good life. Such auspicious times are called Shubha Muhurat or Muhurtham. These windows of ‘good time’ are created by the planets and the stars. The positions and movements of the planets determine if a particular time period is good or bad for a particular activity. For example, Rahu Kalam, Yamagandam, and Gulika Kaal are inauspicious times when people do not perform any important activities.
Hinduism ascribes great importance to Shubha Muhurat. The Vedas and Puranas also talk of the importance of beginning new work during the Shubh Muhurat to ensure good outcomes. During a Shubha Muhurat, the planets and nakshatras will be in alignment. This creates beneficial outcomes. The Muhurtham for an event is usually determined by an astrologer or pandit based on the native’s birth chart and Janma Nakshatra.
There are 30 Muhurats in Vedic astrology. These have been divided into 48-minute periods for all 24 hours in a day. Some of these Muhurats are auspicious, while others are inauspicious.
In Ayurveda, it is believed that if someone who is ill takes medicine on the 8th day of a lunar month, they will heal faster. The reason is that the Earth and the Moon are at the farthest distance from each other on the 8th day of every month. On account of this, the liquid medicine will be stable in the sick person’s stomach, and it will take effect quickly and in a better way.
By choosing the right Muhurtham for a specific event, one can align oneself with the planets and stars. This will enhance the chances of success in that event. Success in any new endeavor depends on 5 elements of the Panchanga- Vara (weekday), Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (constellation), Yoga (lunisolar day), and Karana (half of a lunar day). One can discern these elements from the planetary positions, and they are also in the Panchangam, the daily Hindu calendar, which contains important astrological information in a tabulated form. To select a favorable Muhurtham, the Ascendant and Moon must be strong during the chosen time and in the person’s horoscope.
Panchangam for Finding Shubh Muhurat
Panchangam or Panchang is a valuable tool for astrologers, as it helps them to find the right day and time (Shubh Muhurat) for performing traditional Hindu rituals. The Sanskrit word, ‘Panchang,’ means ‘five limbs’. These 5 limbs signify 5 energy sources that are both visible and invisible. Panchangam denotes the 5 attributes of the day – Tithi, Yoga, Vara, Nakshatra, and Karana. Muhurtham or Muhurat is the most suitable time which ensures the right balance of these five attributes. Astrologers use the Panchangam to determine the auspicious times for Hindu social and religious events.
When choosing a Muhurat, each of the Vara, Tithi, and Nakshatra is important, but their combination is even more important. The combination of the Vara, Tithi, and Nakshatra elements is the most important factor in determining whether a specific moment is auspicious or not. So when selecting an auspicious moment, the combination of the Vara, Tithi, and Nakshatra must be favorable. One should not undertake any activity when the Vara, Tithi, Nakshatra Yoga is unfavorable, even if there are other good conditions in the chart.
Griha Pravesh Muhurat
When shifting to a new home, Hindus perform Griha Pravesh Pooja. This is done to remove the negative effects of malefic planets and the negative energy that may prevent the native from living a happy and peaceful life in the new house.
To conduct this Pooja, one has to find an auspicious Muhurat or date. This will help the native to get the maximum benefit from the Griha Pravesh rituals. Kharmaas, Shraadh, Chaturmas, etc., are not good times for the Griha Pravesh Pooja.
